Shirley Alexander -Abilene Reporter-News - October 25, 1997 Gilbert Morris - Gilbert R. Morris - 66, chief sanitarian for the Abilene - Taylor County Health Department for 34 years until retiring, died Friday in a local hospital. Services will be at 2 p-rn. Sunday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory. Burial will be in Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery in Jones County. Mr. Morris was born in Nugent in Jones County and was a lifelong resident and Taylor counties. He graduated from Abilene High School and Hardin-Simmons University. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and received a Good Conduct Medal and Expert Pistol Award. He married Delora Strickland in 1953 in Abilene and was a rancher. He was a past president of the Texas Sanitarian Association and Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery Association, and was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2012. He was a member of Crescent Heights Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of Abilene; one son, Brent Ray Morris of Abilene; one daughter, Darla Johnson of Hamlin; his mother and stepfather, Merle Marris and E.E. Bristow of Hawley; three brothers, R. M. "Bob" Morris, Gary Morris and David G. Morris, all of Abilene: three sisters, Rosa\par Jean Wilson and Donna Marshall, both of Abilene, and Judy Foller of Tullahoma, Tenn; and two grandchildren. Memorials may be sent to West Texas Rehabilitation Center; 4601 Hartford, Abilene 79605. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today in the funeral home.
