Dateline Sarasota, FL: Gertrude A. Powers, 84, of Safe Harbor Circle and formerly of Freeport, Maine, died April 18 at a local health care facility.

She was born at Lisbon Falls, Maine, the daughter of Theodore and Marietta Wardwell Bickford, graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in 1928 and from Farmington Teachers College, now the University of Maine in Farmington, in 1930. Mrs. Powers taught in the towns of Stowe and Fryeburg, Maine, several years before her marriage to Paul L. Powers on June 30, 1934. She lived in Freeport from 1934 until 1980, when she moved here.

She was a past president of the Freeport Woman's Club, a past worthy matron of the Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, from 1957 to 1958. She was a state head of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, and serving as supreme deputy for Maine for some 10 years.

Mrs. Powers was a former member of Arok Chapter, Daughters of the Nile, of the Order of Amaranth, and a past worthy high priestess and a life member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem.

She was a member of Pine Shores Presbyterian Church here.

Her husband died Dec. 15.

Surviving are four daughters, Dalene McNeely of Freeport, Stephanie Whitmont of Sydney, Australia, Pamela Christy of Rome, Italy, and Paula Perron of Palo Alto, Calif.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the prayer garden of Pine Shores Presbyterian Church. Another memorial service will be held in early summer at Freeport. Arrangements are by Toale Bros. Funeral Home. -Portland Press Herald Obituary 26 April 1996
