In World War I, He enlisted as a Captain. Previously, he was in the militia for 1 year with the 14th Field Battalion and 10 years with the 77th Regiment
He demobilized as a Captain. He was slightly wounded on Sep 15, 1916 when he was buried in a building that was hit by a shell. He sailed from Liverpool on the S.S. Metagama, landing in Quebec on May 1, 1919.
In 1918 he listed his next-of-kin as Mrs. G. H. Carpenter (wife) of 51 Grosvenor Road, Aldershot, Eng. Two Assignment of Pay documents in 1918 and 1919 refer to her as Alice D Carpenter of Grovenor Road, Aldershot, Eng and Fruitvale, Ontario, respectively
