George was born in Allen County, Indiana. The attending physician was A. L. Schneider, M.D. He was the third child of his parents, who were both 28 years old at the time. He went to the rural school for District No. 9 in Jefferson Township. His teacher for the years 1932 and 1933 was Mildred Pearl Van Horn. He then went to New Haven High School. He enlisted in the Air Corps on October 9, 1942, at Camp Perry Lacarne as a private. He was married at the time.
