Facts and Events
George made a will a couple of days before he died and left his Bilson Colliery to his seven surviving children "as tenants in common". He left Pds 180 to Sarah, Pds 100 each to Lucy & Abiah and 5 shillings to Ann. (What did she do wrong??) He left Pds 300 to Cornelius but no separate legacies to James or Edward. He left Pds 20 to his grandson Enoch, who had been born in 1798, the illegitimate son of Sarah before her marriage. (This was the only grandson he mentioned in his will). The rest of his estate he divided amongst his sons Cornelius, James and Edward. Cornelius took over Morse Farm and James concentrated on coal mining. He signed his will with a cross. Unlike his brothers he had remained illiterate to his death, although in terms of material wealth he left more than Thomas if less than James. (Extract from the book 'The Industrial Teagues and the Forest of Dean' by Ralph Anstis). George Teague held Bilson, in 1810 leased it to the Bullo Pill Co. who developed it. After his death large portions of it were sold to Edward Protheroe for large sums of money. Bullo Pill Co. entered into an agreement with Moses Teague to work a colliery for them, probably Bilson, and lent him £200. http://www.users.waitrose.com/~iapope/CoalBilson.html |
