Testament Dative of Mr. George Suttie

The testament dative and inventory of the goods, gear, sums of money and debts pertaining to umquhile Mr George Suttie, son to George Suttie merchant burgess of Edinburgh the time of his decease who deceased in the month of May 1661 years. Faithfully made and given up by Catherine Thomsone his relict spouse as having best knowledge, in name and behalf of Catherin and Elyzabeth Sutties minors, lawful children to the defunct and only executors dative decerned to him by decree of the Commissars of Edinburgh as the same of the date the ~ day of ~ 1661 years at more length purports.
In the first the said umquhile George Suttie had the goods, gear, sums of money and debts of the values and prices after mentioned pertaining to him the time of his decease aforesaid viz First, 33 deals and three trees estimated all to £14 12s. Item, a silver goblet and a little cup, besides the inheritance, weighing 18 ounces and two drops at four merks the ounce sum £48 6s 8d money. Item, the library pertaining to him and the furnishings of his house and others therein, estimated all in total to the sum of £200 money.

Follows the debts owing to the dead
Item there was resting owing to the said umquhile defunct the time of his decease aforesaid by Mr Robert Sinclar advocate, William Downy and Patrik Boig and James Cockburne by bond £3000 principal with £180 for one year's annual rent thereof preceding Whitsunday 1661 years aforesaid. By Archibald Sydserf of Rauchlow of principal sum 1000 merks with £20 for one term's annual rent thereof preceding the said term of Whitsunday. By Mr John Fairholme of Craigiehall 2000 merks principal with £10 Scots money of bygone annual rent preceding the said term. By Mr John Hay of Abirlady and his cautioners £2000 principal with £120 for one year's rent thereof preceding the said term.

Eik made hereto as follows: Item there was resting to the said umquhile defunct and omitted out of the principal testament the sum of £8000 principal with £4080 for the annual rent thereof from Candlemas 1660 to Candlemas 1661 years and that as the proportion of umquhile Patrick Thomsone's estate provided to the said Kathrein Thomson spouse to the defunct by her said father by virtue of his latterwill and testament assignation and other rights whereunto the defunct had right jus mariti. And gives and commits ~ Reserving account ~ William Suittie son to George Suittie merchant in Edinburgh cautioner as an act bears.

Eik made hereto as follows: viz there was resting to the defunct and omitted out of his principal testament and eik above written the sum of £5921 13s 4d as due to him jus mariti as spouse to the said Kathrein Thomson who is provided thereto by her father's latterwill and testament assignation and other rights and that in addition to the £8000 with the annual rent already confirmed there was resting by Mr Robert Sinclaire of Laingfarmacus by bond £1200 principal with the annual rent thereof from Whitsunday 1660 to Candlemas 1661 and by Robert Barclay of Pearstoun conforming to his two several bonds £2000 extending in the whole the said sums to £9171 13s 4d. And gives and commits ~ Reserving account ~ William Suittie his brother cautioner as an act bears.
  • The relationship between Sir George Suttie of Balgone and his father George Suttie of Addistoun is proved by the pre-marriage contract of Katherine Suttie. It says, in part, "Katharine Suttie, eldest daughter of deceased Mr. George Suttie of Adnistoun, ...and Sir George Suttie of Balgon, her brother german"
