  1. RANDOLPH - George Edwin Smedema, 83. of Randolph, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 4, 2007, at the Continental Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Randolph.

    George was born on Oct. 29, 1923, in the town of Fox Lake, a son to John and Francis (Huizenga) Smedema. As a young man, George helped on the farm and held various local jobs until he began his service with the U.S. Army. On Dec. 9, 1949, he was united in marriage to Norma Redeker in Randolph. George was self-employed with a feed and an implement dealership. He was also formerly employed at Busse Brothers as an assembler, and at Randolph Christian School and Randolph High School as a custodian. He was always improving and inventing new ways to enjoy the world around him, even with his Volkswagen Beatle, which he started with a pull rope. George was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church where he has served as elder. He devoted time to the boards of both the Randolph Christian School and the Christian Home of Waupun. He was also a member of the Randolph Chamber of Commerce. George enjoyed his family, flowers, parades and NASCAR racing.

    George is survived by Norma, his wife of 57 years; five children, Thomas Smedema, Madison, Douglas (Debbie) Smedema, Randolph, Keith (Melinda) Smedema, Indianapolis, Ind., Dawn (Dale) Patrick, Fall River, and Brian (Wendy) Smedema, Juneau; 11 grandchildren, Lucas and Adam Smedema, Ryan and Miranda Smedema, Katie and Daniel Smedema, Weston, Taylor, and Mackenzie Patrick, and Brenna and Keyne Smedema; his sister, Annabelle DeVries; his brother, Curtis (Jessie) Smedema; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Smedema, Irene Heeringa, and Odeline (George) Terborg, and a brother-in-law, Harold (Cynthia) Redeker.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Logan Smedema; a sister, Beatrice Wiersma; a brother, Ben Smedema; four brothers-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
