George Patterson, son of Robert Rumgay and Charlotte Robertson, was born on 18 April 1822 in Auchtermuchty, Fife, Scotland. He was baptized on 28 April 1822 in Auchtermuchty.

Marriage banns for he and Elizabeth Guthrie were published on 4 March 1855 in Arngask parish, Fife. He married Elizabeth Guthrie, daughter of Robert Guthrie and Helen Grame, on 16 March 1855 in Abernethy parish, Perth, Scotland.
