George William Ripley was born 2 June 1913 at 267 Bow Common Lane, Mile End Old Town, the fourth child of Harry Ripley, a carman, and Elizabeth Clark. He was baptised at St. Luke's Church, Mile End on 21 Jun 1913.

Three months before George was born, his two year-old brother Joseph died of broncho-pneumonia. His eldest brother Harry George Ripley was later killed during World War II when his ship was torpedoed in the Atlantic. George also had two sisters, Elizabeth Amelia, who married US airman John Ford, and Lillian Harriet, who married Robert Charles Colpus.

George married Vera Isabel "Peg" Young on 30 September 1939 in Stepney, witnessed by George's father (or possibly brother?) Harry Ripley, and Vera's sister Constance Beatrice Sheridan. Harry and Vera had three daughters, one of whom was born at Peg's sister's place in Surrey during the war in order to escape the bombing of London during the blitz.

He worked as a lorry, bus, and forklift driver; as a porter at the Smithfield market; and he also worked in print. He enjoyed working outside.

George died 19 June 1979 at Oldchurch Hospital in Romford, Essex.
