I have two RANKIN lines in Augusta Co. VA -- the fartherest back anyone has been able to trace them. I would be delighted to learn of their whereabouts before arriving in the valley circa 1738. This is my main RANKIN line:

George "of Middle River" d. 26 JAN 1760. His wife Martha is possibly a CRAWFORD, sister of George, Patrick, James and Alexander. She married 2ndly Robert Stephenson who died 1772.

George and Martha had: Jean b. 1743 m. James BELL Capt. Thomas b. 1745 d. 1787 m. Mary CRAWFORD William b. 1748 d. 1817 in SC m. Letitia ROBERTSON, dau of Wm John b. c1750 d. 1790 didn't marry James b. c1752 d.1822 m. Jane "Jinny" RUSSELL Robert b. c1755 d.1815 m. Elizabeth RUSSELL Mary b. c1759 d. 1788 in KY m. John YOUNG

My second line takes a bit of explaining. George (1782-1854) son of Capt. Thomas and Mary (Crawford) Rankin lived with his Uncle William Rankin after the death of both his parents. He appears in William's household in South Carolina from 1793 on. However, he returned to Augusta County VA to marry "Mary RANKIN, spinster daughter of James RANKIN dec'd" in 1806.

There is NO unaccounted for James Rankin in Augusta Co. records. So I'm willing to consider "any" James who d. before 1806 -- actually before 1789 -- within reasonable vacinity of Augusta Co. VA. My reasoning for the earlier death date:

George and Mary (Rankin) Rankin's eldest son, named his first son, Wm Robertson Rankin -- after the father of Letitia (Robertson), wife of George's Uncle William Rankin. This grandson (1849-1913) said his grand parents, George and Mary (Rankin)were first cousins. The closest we've come is IF Letitia is Mary's mother -- but the marriage bond says Mary's father is James Rankin dec'd!

William and Letitia (Robertson) Rankin were married before SEP 1789 when Augusta Co. records show them going to KY and someone was sent to collect her (Lettice's) dower release. However, they are back in Augusta Co. in 1790 and in SC (area that became Anderson Co.) by 1793. According to the 1800 Pendleton Dist SC census they had: 1 male under 10; 1 male 10-16; 1 male 16-26; 1 male 45 & over; 1 female 10-16; 1 female 26-45. From other records we know the household consisted of:

William b. 1748 d. 1817 and Letitia (Robertson) d. before MAR 1822 1. James b. c1785 -- went to Marion Co. MS then TX 2. Mary 'by tradition' b. 1787 d. 1873 m. George RANKIN 1806 3. John "by tradition" but not found in any records 4. William Milton b. 1792 d. 1867 Marion Co. MS m.Martha WARREN 5. Francis b. 1801 d. 1836 Bracken Co. KY m. John GILL

Of these, if W. R. Rankin is correct, James and Mary are children of James Rankin and Letitia Robertson. William Rankin's will is mentioned within deed records, but was not actually probated in Anderson Co. SC. According to the deeds, he divided his property three ways -- to James, William and George.

Any help untangled my RANKINs will be greatly appreciated. Linda
