George Patterson's origins have yet to be established. In the two censuses in which he appeared as an adult he gave conflicting places of birth, claiming to have been born in England in the 1841 census, and in Yetholm, Roxburghshire, Scotland in the 1851 census. The two censuses and his death certificate also give quite a range of possible dates of birth for him, implying that he was born somewhere between 1786 and 1801. George's death certificate claims his parents were an agricultural labourer named Robert Patterson and his wife Janet.

George's first confirmed sighting is on 5th August 1817, when he married Hannah Sproat at Yetholm. They then appear to have spent a few years moving around Roxburghshire, having three children baptised in Roxburgh, then a daughter who gave her birthplace as Morebattle, before returning to Yetholm where they appear to have had at least another two children.

The 1841 census finds George, Hannah and six children living in Town Yetholm, with George working as an agricultural labourer. They were still there in 1851.

George died on 14th June 1859 at Town Yetholm. His death certificate describes him as being a retail merchant, suggesting he had changed his occupation towards the end of his life. Hannah continued the business after his death, appearing in the 1861 census as a grocer in Town Yetholm. She survived George by nearly five years.
