George Nicholls was born on 5th February 1911 at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, son of a straw hat machinist named Annie Maria Nicholls, formerly Moles, and her husband George Nicholls, a bricklayer. He was the youngest of the couple's seven children, although two of the elder children had died before George's birth, such that he was in effect the youngest of five children. George with his parents and siblings in about 1918
The family remembers George as being deaf, but having a happy and hearty disposition. His father died in 1931. At the outbreak of the Second World War, George was living with his mother at 68 Cravells Road in Harpenden and working as a builder's labourer.
George's mother died in September 1944. Around the same time, George's health deteriorated and he spent some time in the Three Counties Hospital at Stotfold. His family used to visit him, but the journey from Harpenden was difficult. George only outlived his mother by about 18 months. He died on 2nd February 1946 at the Three Counties Hospial, three days before what would have been his 35th birtday. He was buried back at Harpenden, in the same cemetery as his parents.
