Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's:


  • Page 117.--14th January, 1791. William Tate, of Washington County, Va., and Agness, to George Lots. (Note: location and number of acres not listed in abstract, although by back-tracking through the previous transactions, it appears to be part of the tract in Beverley Manor acquired by David Kerr from Andrew Cowan in 1778).

  • Vol. 2 - Marriage Bond in Augusta County, 1795--March 9, George Lott, Jr., and John Bright, surety. George Lott, Jr., and Elizabeth Bright, daughter of Geo. Adam Bright (consent). Teste: John Bright. (Note: the was marriage bond for George's son).
  • Vol. 2 - Marriage Bond in Augusta County, 1797--March 20, Christian Hearse (German) and Henry Lotts (German), surety. Christian Hearse (German) and Mary Lotts, daughter of Geo. Lotts (Loetz).



Information on George Lotts, Sr.

Some sources (including a familysearch submission) claim that George Lotts, Sr. died on 20 Sept. 1845, but that would have made George abt. 103 years old when he died, which is somewhat questionable. More reserch necessary.

  1. George Lotts (1742-1845) of Augusta County, Virginia, appears to have been born with the name Lörch, in the Palatine region of Germany. His name went through several variations, and finally became Lotts.

    George Lotts, Sr (c1742-20 Sep 1845) married (1) Anna Maria; m(2) 6 Jun 1778 Anna Barbara Scheib in Montgomery Co, PA. Settled in Pennsylvania 1767, moved to Augusta County, Virginia, purchasing land in Riverheads District in January, 1791. George and Barbara are buried in Hanger Cemetery, Dutch Hollow, but there is no marker. Yes, he did live to be 103, and left a will.
    George Lortz was taxed in Franconia Twp, Philadelphia County, in 1774. George Lorch served as an election judge in Berks County, Pennsylvania 14 Oct 1777. George Lortz served in the 6th Company, 5th Battalion, Philadelphia County Militia, on 22 Nov 1782, under Capt. Philip Reed (Pennsylvania Archives, Series 6, Volume 1, Page__) George Lortz was taxed in 1783 in Worcester Twp, Philadelphia County, for the estate of William Lano. George Lorah (also Lora) was elected a Justice for Amity Township, Berks County in 1789. And in the Census of 1790, Geo Lorah was in Amity Township with 3 males age 16 and over, 2 males under 16, and 6 females. There were three other George Lotz (or Larah) in Pennsylvania, all in Berks County, but with the wrong combination of males and females.

    6. Johannes Henry Lotts (7 Oct 1779-aft.1880) m.20 Oct 1798 Elizabeth "Betsey" Cook, daughter of
    . . Jacob Koch, and lived in Sulivan County, Tennessee
    7. Daniel Lortz (5 Oct 1781) married Oct 1818 Diane Roland. He was not mentioned in his father’s will in
    . . 1845, but witnessed his brother George’s will in 1830, signing as "Daniel Lortz."
    8. Margaret "Peggy" Lotts (bapt. 27 Oct 1784-after 1846). married a Coffman
    9. Anna Elisabeth Lotts (20 Dec 1790), not mentioned in her father’s will
    ?. Jacob Lotts lived in Rockingham County in 1810, He was not mentioned in his George’s will, and not
    . . accounted for in the 1790 Census. Perhaps a nephew?
