Whilst this birth certificate gives George's father as Robert De la Porte, who was Emma's husband at the time, other evidence suggests this may not have been the case:
Emma and Robert were living apart at the time of the 1881 census, just a few days after George's birth.
George's forename is given as 'George William Jones'.
Emma went on to marry George William Paris Jones in 1883, just eleven weeks after Robert De la Porte's death - a remarkable short gap.
George William Paris Jones has not been found in the 1881 census, but he had been living in Weymouth in 1871, showing he was also connected to the area.
The child whose birth certificate suggests his name should have been George William Jones DE LA PORTE instead was known as George William JONES for the rest of his life.
