George Haydon was born In London in 1821

He undertook a blacksmithing apprenticeship with his uncle William in 1838 at Lime Kiln lane (now St George) in Bristol.

He married Clarissa Watts on 25 June, 1839 in Saffron hill, Camden [London]. They had four children together in London, before emigrating to Port Fairy, Australia (then known as Belfast) where George set up his own business as a blacksmith. His eldest son, also named George, trained as a blacksmith and worked in Port Fairy for two years before setting out on his own.

George and Clarissa had five more children in Port Fairy, as well as raising their daughter Sarah's son Ernest.

He is buried in the cemetary at Corowa in New South Wales
