George Wells Coon 1854-1938 Milton Newspaper Obituary "Milton Junction Telephone", Thursday, Sep. 8, 1938, p 1. George Wells Coon, 84, retired special agent for the Northwestern National Fire Insurance company, died Saturday night at his home in Milton Jct. Although he had been in failing health several years, he was confined to his bed just one week. Funeral services were held at 4 p. m. Monday in the Milton Jct. S. D. B. church, Dr. Edwin Shaw, Milton, a distant cousin, officiating. Burial was in Milton Jct. cemetery. Pallbearers were his five sons, Ross C., Wallace W., Carroll, Clarance, and Lawrence and his only surviving nephew, Prof. Fay. B. Coon of Milton and West Allis. Attending the funeral, those not previously mentioned include Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Webster and Paul, River Forest, Ill; Mr. and Mrs. Merle Deardorff and two children, Brookfield, Ill.; Mrs. W. W. Coon and Beverly, Walworth; Mr. and Mrs. Loraine Coon, Monroe; Lois Coon, Milwaukee; Mrs. Carroll Coon and daughter, Madison; Phillip Coon and daughter, Beaver Falls, Pa; Mr. and Mrs. Chester Miller, Evansville; F. M. Britt and family and Mrs. Walter Harte, Janesville. George Wells Coon was born July 27, 1854, at Ashaway, Rhode Island. (His ancestor, Dr. John Mac Coone had come to Rhode Island from Aberdeenshire, Scotland, in 1660.) He was the youngest of three children of Lafayette Coon and Mary Wells Coon. When he was six years old the family moved to Utica, Wis., coming to Milton Junction later. Mr. Coon was married to Adelle May Whitford May 3, 1882. Five children were born to them: Ross C. Coon; Lillian; now Mrs. A. E. Webster of River Forest, Ill,; Dr. W. W. Coon of Walworth; Nina, who became Mrs. Fred Burdick and who died Oct. 10, 1918; and Carroll L. Coon of Madison. Mrs. Coon died June 14, 1897, when Carroll was a small child. On June 22, 1898, Mr. Coon married Grace Amelia Clark who with their three children, Marion, now Mrs. Merle Deardorff of Brookfield, Ill., Clarence Coon of Milwaukee and Lawrence Coon of New Holstein, and fourteen grandchildren, survives. Mr. Coon was an enterprising business man and citizen. Aside from his work with the Northwestern National Fire Insurance company, with which he was connected for 35 years, he was the first president of the Burdick Cabinet company, now the Burdick corporation. He was a director of the Milton and Milton Junction Telephone company and he was a member and president of the Milton Junction school board, from 1909-1915. He was affiliated with the Du Lac lodge, I. O. O. F. of Milton, and was a charter member of the Milton Jct. camp of M. W. A. As a young man he was a member of the Utica band. Throughout his life he was a loyal and consistent member and supporter of the Seventh Day Baptist Church.
