  • 7 Oct 1749 - received a grant of 400 acres on the south side of the north branch of the Catawba River (in present-day Mecklenburg County, NC).
  • 24 Jun 1751 - received 312 acres in Anson County (present-day Rowan County, NC) from Lord Granville "in the parish of St. George, joining the N. Side of James Cathey's Creek, Cathey's land, and Robert Reed...Surveyed 20 Nov 1750.
  • 25 Mar 1752 - George Cathey, "planter of Anson County" received from Lord Granville a grant of 630 acres in Anson and located on Sills Creek near Marlings Bridge and adjacent to property owned by James Alexander. [Rowan County Deed Book 3:1, proved July 1755.]
Note: on this day, records show that heads of Cathey households received 7 land grants totaling 3,752 acres. The Cathey Settlement (also known as the Irish Settlement) was located west of present Salisbury, NC. It is described in great detail by author Robert W. Ramsey in his book "Carolina Cradle."

  • 31 Oct 1755 - George Cathey, Sr. & wife Jean sold 315 acres of land on a branch of Sills Creek near Marlings Bridge to George Cathey, Jr. for 100 pounds proclamation money. This tract is one-half of the tract granted by Lord Granville to George Cathey, Sr. [Rowan County Deed Book 3:393, proved July 1956]
  • 25 Jan 1756 - purchased Lot No. 11 located in Salisbury.
  • 23 Jun 1758 - sold Salisbury Lot No. 3 to John Braley "schoolmaster" for 12 pounds 5 shillings proclamation money. Witnessed by Andrew Cathey and Thomas Braley
  • 10 Jul 1758 - George Cathey, Sr. & wf Jean of Rowan County, to John Tool of Anson, grandson of sd George & Jean Cathey, for natural love & affection...land on S side of N br Catawba, adj Sam'l Cor- - -, & Leeper, being the plantation that Matthew Tool now lives on, 400 A, granted to George Cathey 7 Oct 1749.

  • 1759 - lost 225 acres of the Sills Creek property (630A) as a result of Crown action "against James Carter, Edward Hughes, George Forbis and George Cathey - - by action of debt." Archibald Cathey, son of George, was the high bidder at the sheriff's sale, and was apparently able to purchase the property at a low cost.
