Land Acquisition

George Campbell of Albemarle Co., VA bought 300 acres from John Chriswell of Williamsburg. Land was located on both sides of north fork of Rockfish River in Albemarle Co., VA. (Albemarle County, Virginia Deed Book 4, pages 48-49)


Will Transcript

Will of George Campbell, written 1 November 1776, proven 5 May 1777
In the name of God Amen, I George Campbell of Amherst County being sick and weak in body but of sound and perfect memory thanks be to Almighty God for the same and knowing the uncertainties God have been pleased to bestow upon me I give and bequeath as follows: Will: Imprimis:
I order all my Just Debts and funeral charges to be paid out of my whole Estate.
Item: I give and bequeath to my loving wife Margret Campbell my whole plantation while she lives a widow and in case she marry's the said plantation shall be sold and my said wife to go off with her third of my moveables, and out of the money arising out of the price of said plantation and my moveable Estate I give and bequeath to my Daughter Catherine Twenty pounds.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son John Fifteen pounds of the rest of the money arising from my Estate real and personable to be divided equally among the rest of my Children (viz.) Elisabeth, Archibald, George, Edley, Thomas, Margaret and Ruth Campbell and Incase any of the above Children named should abscond or entirely go off before they come of age (marriage excepted) then such child or children shall not receive one farthing  :Lastly I constitute and appoint my loving wife Margret Campbell and Charles Patrick Executors of this my last Will and Testament as Witness my hand and seal the 1st Nov. 1776.

At a Court held for Amherst County the 5th day of May 1777. This last will and testament of George Campbell deceased was presented in Court by Margret Campbell and Charles Patrick the Executors therein named, whereupon the said will was proved by the Oaths of Thomas Pannett and Charles Patrick (he the said Charles Patrick renouncing the Executorship) which is ordered to be recorded and in the motion of the said Margret Campbell who made oath according to Lay, Certificate is granted for her obtaining probate thereof in due form giving Security whereupon she with Alexander Reid Jun. Gent. and John Henderson her Securities entered into and acknowledged bond of the penalty of 500 lb with the condition required by law and the said Margret in Orphans Court being the widow relict of the said George Campbell did renounce all benefit and advantage which she might claim by the said will and demanded her thirds according to law.

Know all men by these presents that we Margret Campbell, John Henderson and Alexander Reid Jun. are held and firmly bound to James Nevell, Ambrose, Rucker, Alexander Reid Jun., and William Horsley, Gentlemen instituted of the Court of Amherst County now siting in the sum of two hundred pounds current money of Virginia to the payment whereof well and truly to be made to the said Justices and their successors, we bind ourselves and each of us, our and each of our heirs, Executors and administrators, jointly and severally firmly by these presents sealed with our seals this fifth day of May in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven hundred and Seventy Seven, and in the first year of the Common Wealth.
The Condition of this obligation is such that of the above bound Margret Campbell Executrix of the last Will and Testament of George Campbell deceased do make or cause to be made a true and perfect Inventory of all singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said deceased which have or shall come to the hands possession or knowledge of the said Margret Campbell or into the hands and possession of any other person or persons for her and the same so made do Exhibit into the County Court of Amherst at such time as she shall be thereunto required by the said Court, and the same goods Chattels and Credits, and all other the goods chattles and credits of the said deceased, which at any time after shall come to the hands possession or knowledge of the said Margaret Campbell or into the hands and possession of any other person or persons for her, do will and truly administer according to Law, and further do make a Just and True account of her acting's and doings therein when thereto required by the said Court, and also shall well and truly pay and Deliver all the legacies contained and specified in the Said Testament as far as the said Good Chattels and Credits will thereunto extend, and the Law shall Charge, then this obligation to be Void and of none effect or else to remain in full force and virtue.
