Advisory on Parentage of George Bright

Some sources claim that George Bright's father was Tobias Bright, but based upon other sources, this is incorrect. George's father, according to records in Pennsylvania, appears to be Stephan Brecht.

Will Abstract:
Page 371.--14th April, 1804. George Adam Bright's will--To sons, John and George Bright, land adjoining Steele, Tate, Hufman, and Shultz; to five daughters, daughter Rebecka, son Windle, son David. Executors, sons John and George. Teste: William and Robert Steele, James Fulton. Proved, 25th June, 1804. Executors qualify.
Will Transcript:
I, George Adam Bright, of Augusta County, State of Virginia do hereby make my last will & testament in manner & form following, that is to say, after all my just debts & funeral expenses are paid. I give & bequeath to my two sons, John Bright & George Bright, their heirs & assigns forever, all the land I possess adjoining James Steele, John Tate's heirs, Nathaniel Steele, Jasper Huffman & George Schultz to be delivered by the line I marked on the hill between where John Bright now lives & George Bright. Beginning on James Steele's line at the timbers I marked & running near the top of the South sided of the Ridge to a white oak on the said Harpers line each one are to have the part the line with their appurtenances.
I order my son John Bright to pay out of the value of the said land Forty five pounds to be divided equally between my five daughters & their heirs.
I further order my son George Bright to pay fifty pounds after my death out of the said land which is willed to him to be equally divided between my five daughters of their heirs.
I give & bequeath to my son John Bright his heirs & assigns forever all that tract of said land I own lying on the head of Pine run adjoining the lands of John Tate, dec., & a survey I have between the saw mill & the line including by Patent about two hundred & forty acres.
I give & bequeath the saw mill & forty acres.
I give & bequeath to my son George Bright the one half of a tract of land adjoining the saw mill place, Campbells land & the tract which I have willed to my son John which half is to be taken off the end the joins the said Campbells land & in consideration of the said land I direct my son George to maintain in a decent manner my daughter Barbarah as long as she lives & is not in a situation to support herself.
I further conceive that my son Windle Bright has received a full share of my estate which was four hundred & eight acres of land which he sold to Thomas & William Steele & received payment.
I direct my executors here after mentioned to sell as soon after my death as can with convenience the ballance of that tract of land after the one half which I have willed to my son George Bright to be sold together with the said Mill Tract & the money arising from the sales of both Tracts to divided equally between my five daughters & my son David Bright.
Lastly I appoint my two sons John Bright & George Bright my Executors of this my last will & Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made, in Testimony whereof, I have here unto set my hand & seal this fourteenth day of April Eighteen hundred & four.

  • Page 229.--26th June. 1781. Robert Campbell Cutler's will--To wife, Mary; to eldest son, George, the Round Hill plantation, 140 acres joining Geo. Bright and home plantation. Also 200 acres, likewise 50 acres more adjoining Robert Shaw and David Williamson; to 2d son, Robert, home plantation 200 acres; also the Maple Swamp plantation 150 acres; also 200 acres of an entry adjoining Geo. Bright and the Mill place bought of David Williamson; to daughter, Jannett, tract between home plantation and Beverley Manor; to wife. Executors, wife Mary and sons George and Robert and daughter Jannet. Teste: William and Mary Forgason. Proved, 16th April, 1782, by the witnesses. Widow Mary qualifies.
