George Wayne Anderson, eldest child of George Anderson and Eliza Clifford Wayne, was born May 3, 1796, in Savannah, and died April 25, 1872. He married, May 11, 1820, his first cousin, Eliza Clifford Stites, daughter of Richard Montgomery Stites and Mary Wayne (and grand-daughter of Richard Wayne and Elizabeth Clifford). In the war of 1812-1815 he was commissioned Major in the service of the United States and subsequently attained great prominence in the financial world. He was for forty years the President of the Planter's Bank in Savannah, and during the administration of President Jackson was tendered, but declined, the important office of Secretary of the Treasury of the United States.
