Garnet Joan (Joanne) Keck, daughter of Mack and Grace Keck, was born in Westerville, Ohio, on 26 February 1920 and lived there until around 1930-1931, early in the Great Depression, when the family moved to Marshall, Texas, where her father had found work. She was a beautiful, small, dark-haired young lady who loved to dance. She was a runner up in the Miss Texas contest of 1935, or thereabouts. When she was sixteen, she met and married James Nelson Flanagan. When they met at a dance he was introduced as Flanagan and she told him, “With an Irish name like that, your first name must be Pat.” He said it was and the nickname stuck with him the rest of his life. She was a sweet, sensitive woman who loved to give to and do for others. She loved to cook and to read, especially cookbooks, and was always going to write a cookbook but never got around to it. She was an excellent cook. After Pat came home from Guam in World War II, they moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he worked for Monsanto Chemical Co., and then to St. Louis, Missouri (University City, and Kirkwood) where they remained for the next ten years. They divorced in 1957, and she moved back to Texas in 1959, before returning to Westerville, Ohio, where she died of breast cancer in 1969.
