He was born Foulque of Anjou, and was known as Fulk the Surly (Foulque le Réchin). Plantagenêt was not used as the family name until the fifteenth century.
Fulk became Count of Anjou in 1067 after ousting his elder brother. He ruled jointly with his son, Geoffrey IV, from 1098-1106, when Geoffrey died.
