Civil War
Frederick Slocum served in the Civil War, albeit briefly. At age 19, he was mustered into service as a private with the 7th Infantry Regiment of Massachusetts on June 15, 1861. He received a disability discharge from Company B, 7th Infantry Regiment Massachusetts on 20 Feb 1862. While on guard duty in Washington, DC, Private Slocum was injured by being kicked by a horse. He never saw combat service with the regiment, as he was discharged before the Army of the Potomoc's Peninsula Campaign in the spring of 1862.
His descendants still have a copy of his discharge from service, as well as correspondence relating to his quest for a pension due to his injury. Clippings in his papers indicate it took a special Act of Congress to receive his pension.
After leaving the Army, Frederick Slocum received a Seaman's Protection CertificateS10 in Fall River, MA. It is unknown whether he served in any Naval capacity during the Civil War.
Occupation
Frederick Slocum appears to have had a Seaman's Protection CertificateS11 prior to the Civil War as well, issued in 1857. This certificate is indexed as for Frederick O Slocum, but I am fairly well satisfied that there are no other Frederick Slocums of his age in Tiverton/Fall River at this time.
