Fred E. Bowen's father died shortly after the Civil War. His mother then married William David Fox. Hattie, Fred Bowen's sister, died rather young of consumption (TB). Fred was reared near Suttons Bay, Michigan. He had half-brothers named Frank and Roy, Artie and William Fox. The family lived in Dayton, Tennessee, in 1895.
