    Fred Shepherd
    Fred L. Shepherd died Tuesday, October 30, 1984, at the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka. He was 86 years of age. Fred was born on October 24, 1898, at Kingman, Kansas, to Charles and Eva Eppley Shepherd. He lived his early years in Kingman where he began school, until his family moved to Hartford, Kansas. During his senior year of high school, Fred moved with his family to Emporia, Kansas,, where he graduated from high school. He was a member of the Championship football team of 1918.
    He entered Emporia State College and was a member of the S.A.T.C. there before entering World War 1. Fred was a private in the United State Army before his discharge at the end of the war. He returned to Kansas and, on January 17, 1925, he united in marriage with Beulah Christine Andrews at Howard. To this union were born a son, George Allen, and a daughter, Lucile. George died at the age of five years. Fred was a painter and carpenter during most of his life. He enjoyed woodworking, and was very interested in building miniature rocking chairs from various kinds of wood. He was skilled in working with his hands.
    Fred was a member of the Carter-Rader American Legion Post #149 at Howard.
    He is survived by his wife, Beulah; a daughter, Lucile Morgan of Chanute; two brothers, Myrl Shepherd of Mesa, Arizona, and Paul Shepherd of Emporia; a sister Vera Morris of Clyde, Kansas; three grandchildren, Michael Morgan and Christy Jones, both of Chanute and Charles Morgan of Waterloo, Iowa, and six great grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 2, 1984, at the Zimmerman Funeral Home with Bernard Smith of the Howard Church of Christ officiating. The organist was Mrs. Robin Smith with Mrs. Louise Morgan singing "God's Tomorrow" and "Take My Hand Precious Lord." The Casket bearers were John Batson, Frank Gibbon, Waldo Gray, Glenn Miller, Paul Moore, and Louis Wiseman. Interment was held in Grace Lawn Cemetery at Howard with military graveside services conducted by Carter-Rader Post #149. The funeral arrangements were made with the Zimmerman Funeral Home of Howard.
