Quincy Sgt. Returns With Crippled Pacific Bomber

Master T. Sergeant Frank Smith Member of Bomber Crew Witch Made Record Flight From Jap Territory Despite Engine Trouble

SOMEWHERE IN THE MARINAS ISLANDS (Delayed) -- Master T. Sgt. Frank E. Smith, 23, USMC, of 7 Clement Terrace, Quincy, completed one of the longest, single-engine combat flights on record in a Mitchell bomber recently when his plane developed engine trouble while flying deep in Japanese territory.

    Cylinder Head Cracks
Sargeant Smith was a radia gunner in a Mitchell bomber piloted by Marine Lt. Col. Jack R. Cram, of Albany, Oregon, senior officer of a marine bomber unit of the Fourth Marine Wing, commanded by Maj. Gen. Louis E. Woods.
Colenel Cram was on a routine search mission Japanese shipping when an engine cylinder head cracked.
"I cut the engine and decided to return to our base," Colonel Cram said. "We found we could maintain a safe altitude by jettisoning some of our gear, which we did."
"When we made the decision to turn back, we communicated with another of our planes, piloted by Lt. Robert J. Hasset, of St. Louis, Mo. They stayed some distance behind us to cover us in the event we had further trouble."
The PBJ1, which the army calls the B-25, flew three and three-quarter hours on the remaining engine back to its home field without losing any appreciable altitude."
Other members of Col. Cram's crew included 2nd. Lt. Thomas J. Jones, of Wilkes Barre, Pa., bombadier-navigator, and T. Sgt. Douglas J. Mathieson, of West Englewood, N.J., radio gunner.
Sergeant Smith is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Smith of the Montclair address. A graduate of North Quincy High School, class of 1939, he was a member of the golf team which won several championships.
Sergeant Smith joined the U.S. marines during April of 1940 and was called up for active duty on Dec. 16, 1940. After training at Quantico, Va., he was sent to the Pacific area eight days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Following 19 months service in the Pacific area, he was returned to the United States where he served for a year and then joined a new squadron of veteran airmen which was formed for further duty in the Pacific area.
Sargeant Smith has a brother, Seamen 2/c Walter Smith, stationed at the U.S. Naval Training Center, Sampson, N.Y., and two sisters, Margaret and Marion, of the home address, who are employed in Boston.
