Page 152, 153 - The Semple gardens were noted, especially the rose gardens. The grounds, sloping gradually down to the river bank, contained rare and beautiful varieties of roses hitherto unknown in this country. They were brought from Rose Cottage of the estate of Mr. Semple’s grandfather, Sir Francis Semple.
