Ezekiel Bennett: Biographical Information

Ezekiel was the son of Adam Bennett and Hannah. Ezekiel's father Adam was formerly enslaved on Magnolia Plantation in Charleston, South Carolina.

He married Lula Davis who was born about 1895 to York Davis and an unknown mother.

Lula died Jan 16th, 1948. She and Ezekiel are buried at Magnolia Plantation.

When Ezekiel registered for the World War I draft, he gave his date of birth as March 14, 1886. He listed his occupation as farmer and employer as N.C. Hastie.

Ezekiel and his family were enumerated on the 1920 Federal Census for St. Andrews Parish, Charleston, South Carolina. The members of their household [transcribed exactly as the Census-taker wrote them] were:

Name
Relationship
Gender
Color
Age
Birth
Bennett, Ezekiel Head
M
B
63
SC
Bennett, Lula Wife
F
B
29
SC
Bennett, Maybell Daughter F B 14 SC
Bennett, Viola Daughter F B 12 SC
Bennett, Susan Daughter F B 10 SC
Bennett, Adames Son M B 8 SC

There is a remarkable discrepancy in the age listed above for Ezekiel, and his age as recorded on other documents. The Census transcription clearly reads "63" for Ezekiel's age, however, his WWI draft registration records his date of birth as March 14, 1886. Further, the inscription on his headstone in the Magnolia Plantation Cemetery lists his birth year as 1886, not 1857 as the above record would imply. Ezekiel was not listed in his parents' household on the 1880 Federal Census. We believe the preponderance of the evidence suggests that the age listed in the 1920 Census record above is an error.

Ezekiel died in Charleston County on 29 Jul 1949 and is buried at Magnolia Plantation.
