He was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on 7 June 1930 by Cardinal Hayes in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, NY, but he was ordained for the Diocese of Portland, Maine. He celebrated his first solemn Mass on 8 June 1930 at the Church of Christ the King in Bronx, NY. He traveled to Ireland in 1932. When he returned, he gave his address in Ireland as Main Street, Rathkeale, Limerick. He was serving in Portland, Maine in the 1940s.

In 1901, the John McEnery family was living on Main Street in Rathkeale.
