Esther Smith was born in 1856 at Luton, daughter of a charwoman named Mary Smith formerly Cain and her husband William Smith, a labourer. The 1861 census finds Esther living with her parents and siblings at Tower Hill, which was a courtyard of cottages on the west side of the road later called Manchester Street in the centre of Luton.

Esther appears to have died in 1869, aged 12.
