Emma May was born in 1842 at Cullompton in Devon, daughter of Susannah May, formerly Greenslade, and her husband William May, a dairyman. She appears in the 1851 and 1861 censuses living with her parents in various rural areas of mid Devon.
In 1868 Emma married her cousin William Bowden at Tiverton. Emma's father and William's mother were brother and sister. Emma and William moved around the mid Devon area, and briefly into neighbouring Somerset. They had nine children together, but by the time of the 1911 census only five were still living. William worked as a dairyman.
Emma appears to have died in 1924, aged about 82. William survived her by two years.
