Emma Marcella Berning, 93, of Chetek, Wis., passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the Knapp Haven Nursing Home in Chetek.

Emma Marcella Libersky was born Oct. 1, 1919, in Bloomer, the daughter of Louis and Emma (Gick) Libersky. She attended school in the Bloomer area and graduated 8th grade from St. Paul’s Catholic School in Bloomer.

Emma married Cyril Berning on June 24, 1950. The couple resided in Chetek, where together they raised their family. She worked for many years at the Chetek High School cafeteria. Emma enjoyed crocheting, gardening, playing cards, painting and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Emma leaves to celebrate her memory four sons, Daniel (Kathy) Mason, of Kalispell, Mont., David (Melody) Mason, of Glasgow, Ky., George (Karen) Berning, of Princeton, Minn., and Tim (Debbie) Berning, of Chetek; one daughter, Carol (Wilbur) Bowe, of Cameron; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Judy Mason; two sisters, Louisa Leavens, of Bloomer, and Clara Schneider, of Chippewa Falls; one brother-in-law, Wilfred Berning; and many other loving family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Emma Libersky; husband, Cyril Berning; two sons, Eugen Mason and Jim Berning; one grandson, John Mason; one great- grandson, Ethan Mason; and several brothers and sisters.

Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Chetek on Tuesday, June 4, where Emma was laid to rest alongside her husband, Cyril, and son, Jim. Casket bearers were Tom Mason, Josh Bowe, Nick Bowe, Greg Berning, Mike Berning and Troy Berning.
