    14 Mar 1935.

Mrs. E.W. Tilton, whose serious illness following a stroke of paralysis, has been noted in our column, passed to rest about 4 o'clock last Friday afternoon at her home on North Main, aged 77 years, 3 months and 7 days. Elvira Washington Bratton was the fourth child of the late James and Louisa Asbury Bratton of this county. Two sisters, Mrs. Zack Stevenson, of Brooksville, and Mrs. Minerva E. Durrum, of Myers, Nicholas county, survive this family of eight. "Aunt Vie" as she was known, and will be remembered became the wife of the late William Henry Tilton, February 12th, 1864. To this union was given ten children, together with the responsibility of mothering Leroy, Luther, Theodore and Ina Tilton, who became her children by right of marriage. Of this united family nine members now survive; Leroy, Sante Fe, Kentucky, Luther of San Diago, California, and Mrs. Ina Meadows, Huston, Texas. Also Mrs. W.H. Claypoole, Mrs. J.N. Buckner, and Miss Ruth Tilton of Mt. Olivet; Mrs. Orville McDowell, Falmouth; Rev. John L. Tilton; also, Mrs. Dr. N. A. Jett, Miss Leila Tilton, Dr. J. J. Tilton, and an infant. Mrs. Tilton has always been religious and a lover of the church. At the age of 12 she was united with the Mt. Zion Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Records place her as the first member of the church at that place. She was an active member in the Eastern Star and Pythian Sisters. She has lived a devout life, one filled with service for her Lord and neighbors. She had personally led many to know Christ. Through the years she may have often erred in judgment, but never in motive, as she dealt with her family and neighbors. She was eager to a fault, that all men, everywhere, live right. During the last hours (following the stroke which came to her February 20th), many inquiring minds and gentle hands sought to minister to her comfort. Funeral services were conducted by her Pastor, Rev. T. W. Beeler, assisted by Rev. Karl Hill and Rev. Floyd Montgomery, in a most impressive way. The pallbearers were Mr. Paul Chaney, of Toledo, O., Shelby Wiggins, Latonia, Kentucky, and Dr. Leslie Buckner and Leo McDowell of Cincinnati, Wiley Jefferson of Brooksville, L.O. Kabler of Mt. Olivet. The floral offerings were beautiful. The interment was on the family lot in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in charge of Kain and Sheeler, local undertakers.

The obituary missed the marriage date by a decade. The correct marriage date is 12 Feb 1874, soon after the death of William Henry Tilton's first wife.
