HUDSON, N.H. - Elmont Eastman "Ward" Wardwell, 85, died late Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 18, 2002, at his home at 3 Page Road in Hudson, after a long battle with mesothelioma. A resident of Hudson for the past 50 years, he was employed as a custodian at Memorial School in Hudson for several years and also worked in the delivery of the "Telegraph". Born in Castine, Maine, on March 14, 1917, he was a son of late Virgil and Rosie (Dodge) Wardwell. A short time after graduating from high school, he answered his country's call and enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Ticonderoga during World War II. He was member of the VFW Post in Hudson. He married Margaret Howard on May 16, 1946, and the couple had observed their 56th anniversary last May. He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Closson; and three brothers, Virgil Jr., George and Clarence Wardwell. Surviving members of his family include his wife, Margaret; a son Thurlow Wardwell of Hollis; three daughters, Darlene Bourque of Derry, Nancy Meier and Winnie I. Shepherd, both of Hudson; four granddaughters and two grandsons; two stepgrandsons, five great-grandchildren; a brother, Phil Wardwell of Castine; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours will be held 2- 4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Farwell Funeral Home, 18 Lock St., Nashua, N.H. His funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Hudson, N.H. Burial will be 1 p.m. Sunday at Castine Cemetery, Castine. -Nashua Telegraph 19 December 2002
