According to family history, Henderson relatives of James offered to adopt some of James and Ellen younger children after James's untimely death. Ellen refused. Friends had suggested to Ellen that there was plenty of opportunity in Manitoba so Ellen decided to move there .Ellen was an excellent seamstress and supported her family after James's death by doing sewing. In Manitoba she managed to be able to afford to buy her own home, which was somewhat unusual in that era.
