Ellen Reid was baptised on 17th July 1825 at Monasterevin in County Kildare, daughter of Mary Reid, formerly Dennan, and her husband Michael Reid, a mason. The family stayed in Monasterevin until at least the 1840s judging by the baptisms of Ellen's younger siblings.

Ellen's next sighting is in 1846, by which time she was married to a teacher named Thomas John MacDonald. They had two children baptised at Bohermeen in County Meath in 1846 and 1847, before settling in Nobber, also in County Meath, where they had another nine children between 1849 and 1865.

Thomas died on 3rd October 1865. He was said to be 44 years old. Ellen secured a grant of administration for his estate on 5th January 1866, after which she has yet to be traced. According to her son William's obituary, Ellen and her husband both died before William was thirteen years old, implying that she died some time between 1866 and 1873.
