Ellen Meakins was born in 1870 in Southwark, in the southern suburbs of London, daughter of a hawker called Ann Meakins, formerly Walter, and her husband John Meakins, a costermonger and general dealer.

Sadly, Ellen died in 1874 when she was only four years old.
