Childhood

Elizabeth Ward was born on 21st August 1812 in the parish of Great Hale in Lincolnshire. She was the third of eight children of a carpenter called Luke Ward and his wife Ann Allam. She was not baptised as a child, but was baptised as an adult of 34, on the same day as five of her other siblings.

Adulthood

When she was 21, Elizabeth had a daughter who was baptised Elizabeth Turner Ward at Heckington, the neighbouring village to Great Hale. Elizabeth Turner Ward's baptism records that the reputed father was Edward Turner, farmer of Heckington. There only appears to have been one such Edward Turner, who was also 21 at the time of Elizabeth Turner Ward's baptism.

Two and a half years later, Elizabeth Ward married a shepherd called Robert Walton, who was also from Great Hale and a couple of years younger than her. Robert and Elizabeth went on to have another six children together, all being born at Great Hale. In every census appearance Elizabeth was living at Great Hale, although Robert appears to have been away from home on the night of the 1881 census.

Elizabeth died on 1st February 1889 at the age of 76 and was buried at Great Hale. Robert died within a month, being buried at Great Hale on 2nd March 1889.
