"Elizabeth (Sherman), b. abt. 1651; d. 11 Nov. 1736 ae. 85 (g. s., New Haven); m. at Sudbury, Mass., 20 July 1687, Samuel Gaskell, b. abt 1650, d. 22 Dec. 1706 ae. 56 (g. s. New Haven). [Samuel Gaskell, Sr., is said by Savage to have m. 20 July 1681 Elisabeth Sherman b. 15 Mar.1649, dau. of Capt. John Sherman of Watertown. Wyman claims that he m. (1) Elizabeth Sherman, dau. of Captain John, and (2) Elizabeth Sherman, dau. of Rev. John. But Capt. John is not known to have had any surviving dau. Elizabeth; he did have a dau. Elizabeth who d. 15 Mary 1649, by Watertown records. By reading the death date as a birth date, an imaginary Elizabeth was created by Savage and Wyman. The date of alleged marriage to the first wife, 20 July 1681, is a misreading of the date of the second marriage, 20 July 1687, to Elizabeth Sherman, dau. of Rev. John. That this later date is correct so far as the year is concerned is proved by the marriage bond of "Samuel Gaskell in the County of Essex Gent and Elizabeth Sherman of Watertown Spinster," which was dated 26 July if correctly read [New Eng. Hist. and Gen. Register, 64-189]. Samuel Gaskell had a first wife Elizabeth, maiden name unknown, who d. at Cambridge, Mass., 18 Oct 1686. By her he had children: Samuel, Jr., m. but d. s. p.' at Stratford Conn,; and John, who d. at Cambridge, Oct. 1686."[1]
