"TRANSFER. A transfer of the license of William Pattman, Somerset Hotel, to Elizabeth Shearman was confirmed, and a new license was granted to Mrs Shearman for the hotel.
Constable Smart reported on all the houses favorably, and said that Sergeant Moller had requested him to draw the Committee's attention to the fact that Mrs Shearman, since opening the Somerset, had kept her house closed to the public on Sundays, a course of action he approved of heartily, and the Sergeant requested that the Committee would ask tke other licensees to adopt the same practice, which he believed would be conducive to the public good. Constable Smart tendered the Sergeant's compliments to the Committee, and regretted that severe illness prevented him frnn attending the sitting.
The Chairman said the licenses were all granted with permission to keep open until eleven o'clock, and to extinguish the outside lamps at eleven o'clock. He was pleased to note the good reports of the Police, most of which the Committee could bear out. He would, however, urge upon the hotelkeepers the necessity for strict observance of the law as regarded Sunday trading, and while not wishing to hold out any threat, he would tell them that if they were bowled out in this matter they would certainly lose their licenses. It would be for them to consider then whether, in risking their licenses for the little bit of profit they might make by selling liquor on Sunday, the game was worth the candle. The Police had reported that Mrs Shearman, since taking charge of the Somerset, had closed her house on Sundays against the sale of liquor, and he trusted all the others would follow her good example.
Mr Crisp, for the applicants, desired to thank the Committee for the common sense view of the Licensing Act they had taken, for declining to put a construction upon the Act which it would not bear, notwithstanding the fever of prohibition which had taken held of some other parts of the colony."
