Richard Riley has commented on his rootsweb chart on Elizabeth's unusual middle name and I have copied it here: "Her name has been recorded in various records as Pulchesa, Polchery, and Pulcharia, as well as Pulcarri which I found in her obituary. The only place I've seen Elizabeth is in family records. She apparently went by her middle name ...which seems common in families from the region, especially if she were named for her mother.

"I did some research on the name Pulcarri. There are references to it in a couple of places, even with it's different spellings. Pulcari brings up several Italians and Spaniards with this as a last name. There appear to be some early historical manuscripts either refering to this name or given this name... Apparently it can classically be pronounced with a "P" or "B."

"On the name spelled Pulcharia, there's this interesting tid-bit: "...One may also cite the role of the granddaughter of the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius I, Pulcheria (sometimes spelled Pulcharia), in both the Third and Fourth Ecumenical Councils, Ephesus and Chalcedon... The Council of Chalcedon can also be traced back to Pulcheria's Byzantine political intrigues."

"Did someone have a classical education on her mother's side? Maybe a Catholic background (since Pulcheria is a Catholic Saint)? The name may have been her mother's name, "Elizabeth P." Caplinger, as well."
