Elizabeth Clark was born 8 May 1877 at 5 Devas Street in Bromley-by-Bow, London, the daughter of blacksmith George William Clark and Harriet Eliza Chipperfield. Elizabeth had nine siblings, George William born about 1865, who worked as a smith; Harriet Eliza born about 1867 who worked as a box maker before marrying match maker Frederick Lowe; labourer and general dealer Benjamin Clark who was born about 1869; two brothers named Joseph who died in their infancy in the early 1870s; Henry, who was born about 1875 and worked as a dock labourer; and three younger siblings Caroline, Charles, and Ada, who all died young.

Elizabeth and her family lived at 8 Stratfield Road in Bromley-by-Bow from at least 1881-1894. Stratfield Rd and Devas St were just around the corner from Stepney workhouse and Booth's poverty map of 1897-98 classed Stratfield Road as "poor", and Devas street as "very poor" and suffering "chronic want". Elizabeth was clearly born into difficult economic circumstances. She attended school nearby with her siblings at Marner Road School.

By 1897 the family was living at 230 Bow Common Lane, and by 1906 coalman Harry Ripley was living with them. On 12 Feb 1906 Harry and Elizabeth were witnesses to Harry's brother Robert's marriage to Emily Fisher. Harry and Elizabeth were married on Christmas Day 1906 at Holy Trinity Church, Mile End Old Town, witnessed by George Collender and Florence Clark (Elizabeth's sister-in-law). Harry's twin Thomas married Elizabeth Bailey at St. Thomas' Church in Stepney on the same day, so it must have been a joyous Christmas for the Ripley family.

Harry and Elizabeth briefly lived at 223 Bow Common Lane in 1907 when their first child Harry George was born on 12 Nov. Elizabeth's brother Benjamin Clark and his wife Minnie were living at the same address on 21 Sep 1907 (according to their daughter Florence's baptism record) but Minnie and her children were admitted to Mile End Workhouse on 19 Nov 1907, just a week after Harry George Ripley was born. It's also possible that Elizabeth's brother Henry Clark and his wife & daughter were living at no. 223 at the same time, because they lived at that address from at least 1910 to 1939.

Harry George Ripley was baptised at the same church his father had been, Holy Trinity in Mile End, and the rest of Harry and Elizabeth's children were baptised at St. Luke's Church, Mile End.

By 1909 Harry, Elizabeth and Harry Jr. were living at 49 Ropery Street when daughter Elizabeth Amelia was born 13 Jul 1909 and baptised on 1 Aug. In the 1911 census Elizabeth's widowed mother Harriet was living with the family. A few months later son Joseph Walter Ripley was born on 10 May 1911 and named after Harry's younger brother Joseph Walter Ripley who died aged 10 (Harry was 18 at the time).

In 1911 and 1913 Harry's occupation was listed as being a paint manufacturer and varnish maker's carman.

By 1913 the family had moved to 267 Bow Common Lane, where sadly their son Joseph died on 1 March 1913 aged just 21 months from bronchopneumonia, a common killer of children - two of Elizabeth (Clark) Ripley's brothers, both named Joseph, died from pneumonia before she was born. On a happier note just a few months later Harry & Elizabeth's son George William Ripley was born on 2 Jun 1913.

1914 was a sad year for the Ripley-Clark family, with Elizabeth's mother Harriet passing away on 20 of Sep at the Mile End Infirmary, and Harry's mother Amelia at their home on the 6 Oct. Both mothers had been living with Harry at 267 Bow Common Lane at the time of their deaths. Also living at 267 Bow Common Lane was Elizabeth's nephew Harry Lowe with his new wife Jane Boreham. Jane had been living at #267 when she married Harry Lowe, while Harry had been living at #249 with his uncle George William Clark.

1915 brought better times with the birth of Harry and Elizabeth Ripley's last child, Lilian Harriet, on 5 Jan 1915.

Many of the Clark family lived nearby in Bow Common Lane in the 1910s and 1920s. From at least 1896-1939 Elizabeth's brother and sister-in-law George and Frances Clark and their family lived at 249 Bow Common Lane, and brother Henry lived with his wife Florence at number 223 from at least 1910-1939. By 1922 Elizabeth's nephew George Samuel Clark (son of George William Clark) had moved with his wife to 247 Bow Common Lane. When Harry and Elizabeth's son George William Ripley married Vera "Peg" Young in 1939 he set up house in nearby Lockhart Street. So despite living in one of the largest cities in the world the Ripley-Clark family stayed close geographically, and presumably socially.

1939-40 was an eventful time in Elizabeth's life. The first of her children to marry (George) married in September 1939, her husband Harry died of a cerebral haemorrhage in Oct 1939, her first grandchild was born in February 1940, and her eldest son Harry was tragically killed in Jul 1940 when his boat was torpedoed by a German submarine in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth married an American serviceman in 1945 and made her life in the United States. Elizabeth Sr. moved back to Ropery Street (number 51) by 1945 (with her son and daughter-in-law George and Peg Ripley just across the road in Lockhart Street) and remained there until her death on 6 June 1960 at Tooting Hospital. She was buried at Tower Hamlets Cemetery on 13 Jun 1960.
