Information on Elizabeth Arey

Elizabeth Arey was born in Frederick Co, VA 11 Feb 1744. Elizabeth died 21 Nov 1793 in Shenandoah Co, VA, at 49 years of age. She married Phillip Long in Shenandoah Co, VA, 1765. Phillip was born in Fort Long, Shenandoah Co, VA 18 Dec 1742. Phillip died 05 Feb 1826 at 83 years of age. Elizabeth and Philip Long lived on the South fork of the Shenandoah River, not far from Luray near the place where their ancestors had settled. This area was later to become Page County. The Long name is German and originally was Lung; which is shown in signatures in German script on several documents in the clerk's office at Woodstock, Virginia. Long family genealogy provided was obtained from the Casper Branner Genealogy and additional research is in progress. The birth, death and marriage of Elizabeth Arey as recorded in "Casper Branner and his Descendants" was obtained from Mrs. Mary Arey Shiflet in 1904 by the author of that genealogy.

Note: Elizabeth Airy's birthdate is variously reported as either in 1744 or 1755 by some sources. Since she was married by about 1765, it is highly unlikely that she was born in 1755, just ten years earlier. One Arey/Airy website has suggested that Elizabeth may have been from an earlier marriage of Gotlieb "Cutlip" Arey in Germany. More research needed.
