She was the daughter of Thomas and Mary McGill Adams. Her parents came from Scotland in 1831 and settled upon a farm of 240 acres in Montgomery where Mister Adams died in 1878, his wife surviving him until 1891. They had 11 children: James, John, Robert and Jennie (twins), Lizzie, Helen, Cornelius, Thomas, George, Frank, and Minnie.
