Eliza Turner was born in 1845 at Heckington in Lincolnshire, daughter of Naomi Turner, formerly Hardstaff, and her husband Edward Turner, a farmer. When Eliza was just five years old her mother died, aged 31. Shortly afterwards Eliza appears in the 1851 census living with her widowed father and sisters. Similarly in 1861 and 1871 she was living at Fen Drove in Heckington with her father and sisters.

In 1874, Eliza married a wheelwright called George Henry Ward. He was a widower, whose first wife had died the previous year. He had four children from his first marriage who thus became Eliza's stepchildren.

Eliza and George went on to have a further five children between 1875 and 1885 at Heckington. Eliza's father died in 1879.

Each census from 1891 to 1901 finds the family living in Heckington, although Eliza was not at home on census night in 1901, as she was staying with one of her married daughters in Spalding.

George died in 1910, aged 65. Eliza survived him by just under ten years. She died in 1919, aged 74.
