Eugene Scheel's historic map of Prince William County shows the former site of two Orlando Schools and an Orlando Methodist Church and cemetery on what is now Orlando Road (Route 608)which is in the Coles Magisterial District.

Here is a map from MapQuest to show the area. The village of Orland would have been about where Orlando Road meets Aden Road on the map, just a short distance east of Cedar Run. The area is along the north side of Quanitco Marine Corps Base, about 5 miles due south of Manassas.

If you would identify the person you are seeking we can tell you if a grave has been located.

Hope this helps. Donald L. Wilson, Virginiana Librarian

-The only person of this group whose name appears in Prince William County Virginia Burial Index 1800-2001, by Ronald Ray Turner (Manassas: Author, 2001), p. 257, is:

POTTER, Lewis Henry, 1870-1932 #49. Cemetery #49 is Bacon Race Baptist Church Cemetery on Davis Ford Road in the Hoadly area (within the Occoquan Magisterial District). He is the only POTTER with a tombstone in that cemetery.

The following members of the family are found in the published marriages records:

POTTER, Lewis Henry, age 38, widowed, born Prince William, son of E. and Sarah, married Grace C. SULLIVAN, age 35, born Prince William, dau. of F.I. and L. SULLIVAN, married 29 Aug. 1895, Prince William County [from abstract by Ron Turner]

POTTER, Eli H., age 35, widowed, born Conn., son of Eli and Mary, married to Fedelia C. KIRBY, age 32, born N.Y. dau. of Henry and Caroliine, married 18 Apr. 1876, Prince William County.

POTTER, Frederick E., age 24, born N.Y., son of E. H. and Sarah H., married Sallie A. RUFFNER, age 21, born Rockinigham County, dau. of Robert and E., married 14 Feb. 1889, Prince William County.

POTTER, Lucy M., age 20, born Prince William, dau. of F. E. and Sallie A., married Charles B. ELLIOTT, age 19, farming, born Prince William, son of John M. and Mary E., married 24 Dec. 1910, Prince William County.

[This couple is also in the Bacon Race Cemetery:

ELLIOTT, Charles B. 5 Sep 1891 – 3 Feb 1974.

ELLIOTT, Lucy M. 10 May 1890 – 20 Jul 1970.

POTTER, Mary Lois, age 17, born Prince Willilam, dau. of Lewis H. and Grace (SULLIVAN), married August DANNEHL, age 38, clerk, born Fredericksburg, Va., son of Henry and Thersa (SCHNELL), married 18 Dec. 1914, Prince William County.

The will of Fidelia C. POTTER was probated in 1920 in Prince William County [Will Book Z, p. 89]

A trustee account for the estate of Lewis H. POTTER and Grace C. POTTER was filed in 1935 [Will Book 3, p. 319].

It appears that, after Lewis’s death, that Grace POTTER married Daniel H. CARTER.

In 1937, Grace C. CARTER and D. H. CARTER her husband sold land in Coles District, formerly the SULLIVAN place, to Henry Myron POTTER and Lewis Hawes POTTER. (PWC Deed Book 98, p. 207). Grace is apparently Lewis Henry POTTER’s widow. She and her second husband are also buried at Bacon Race Church:”

CARTER, Daniel Henry 18 Sep 1872 – 16 Jan 1957.

CARTER, Grace POTTER 8 Jun 1876 – 22 Apr 1970.

Following is in Deed Book 81, p. 336-337 (1925): This image is a deed from Lewis H. and Grace POTTER, 1925, selling land they had received from E. H. and Fidelia POTTER in 1900 and 1907, and from Fidelia POTTER alone (widowed?) in 1912. The description of the land shows exactly where their property lay in the Coles District. If a family graveyard is on the property you would need to track the property location to find it. If the description alone is inadequate it may be necessary to trace a chain of later owners to determine where the property lies today.

Chili Presbyterian Cemetery Chili, New York Picture (Metafile) This cemetery is located on the west side of Chestnut Ridge Road just north of the intersection with Chili Avenue. The tombstones in this cemetery were copied in July 1985 by Mary T. Douglas of the Irondequoit Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. They were copied again in 1935 by Mrs. Mary B. Wells and Frances M. Witmer of Leroy, NY. These two lists were combined and a visit was made to cemetery in Aug. 1991 by Richard T. Halsey and some corrections and additions were done at that time.

Subject: RE: Wills for PW ancestors Date: Thu, 17 Apr 2008 17:01:49 -0400 From: Parham, Scott A. <sparham@@pwcgov.org> To: Mike Perozziello <mperozziello@@cox.net>

Mr. Perozziello: I apologize for my lengthy delay in getting this answer to you. Genealogy has simply become a very, very popular pastime and I am the only person available to do genealogical research among the records of Prince William County. And, after twelve years as a volunteer, I continue to be surprised at the number of people who lived for varying periods of time in Prince William County and whose descendants inquire of their records.

I have checked our wills and probate records and our marriage registrations for the individuals you listed in your inquiry. The following is what I have located and what is available to be copied for you. Using the outline of names of your letter:

ELI H. POTTER: We do not have a license recorded for his marriage to his first wife, SARAH H. JONES, but we have the clerk's copy of the license for Eli's marriage to Fidelia C. Kirby; this is a one page document.

FIDELIA CAROLINE KIRBY POTTER: We have her will recorded in Will Book T: 410; her estate accounts in WB T: 524; and a codicil in WB Z: 89. In the codicil is a statement of her death date. Each document is one page.

FREDERICK EUGENE POTTER: We have his marriage license to SALLIE [SARAH] RUFFNER, but we have no recorded will for him or for neither Sarah Ruffner nor his second wife (MAY ELLA COULTER). The marriage license is a one page document.

HENRY KIRBY: His will is recorded in Will Book T: 367, a one page document.

CAROLINE FIDELIA ANDRUS: We have no recorded will or marriage license for her.

And, lastly, though you did not mention it, we have a trust recorded in the name of JOHN H. KIRBY, recorded in WB T: 242-43, should you want this two page document.

Our court-mandated costs and charges are: A ten dollar search fee per case; a fifty cents copying charge per page; and should you want any document clerk-certified, there will be a two dollar fee per document for that service. I mention this clerk certification because ALL of the national patriotic societies (D.A.R., S.A.R., D. War of 1812, etc.) have advised us that they will accept ONLY certified documents as evidence of proof for applications of membership.

We will be glad to provide you copy of any of the above eight pages of documents, or all of them at a total cost of $14.00. Please send a check payable to Clerk of Circuit Court and address it to:

Your interest in the records of Prince William County is appreciated, and we look forward to your further instructions.
