Excerpt from The Days of the Years of My PilgrimageS4 (the story of Alex E Elliott) -- page 59-60 The following account from a 1944 Star Phoenix is of interest: "WESTERN CANADA FLIER GETS NINTH U.S. ARMY AIR AWARD OTTAWA, March 16, (CP) ,--Air Force headquarters announced Wednesday night that Flt. Lt. Eldon Burke Elliott of Sutherland, Saskatchewan, R.C.A.F. navigator who since has been reported killed in action, has been awarded the United States Army Air Medal. This is the ninth U.S. Army Air Medal to be awarded to an R.C.A.F. member by the President of the U.S. The citation accompanying the award read: "For meritorious achievement while participating in an aerial flight as navigator on a special and hazardous mission into enemy-held territory, October 21, 1943, for the purpose of delivering vitally needed supplies to intelligence personnel operating in that area and to evacuate USA.A.F. personnel shot down in combat. He (Flight Lieutenant Elliott) volunteered for this mission with full knowledge that the chances of successfully completing the mission and returning safely to base were remote. Through his technical ability as navigator, his marked resourcefulness, improvisation, and persistence, he contributed greatly to the success of the mission. Flight Lieutenant Elliott, the 33-year-old son of Rev. A. E. Elliott and Mrs. Elliott of Sutherland, saw service in Britain, Malta, Egypt, and during tile Tunisian campaign. He was killed on air operations over Central Europe in November 1943; he served overseas for about three and one-half years before his death."
