[edit] Information on Edward Small (Smale, Smalley)DESC OF EDWARD SMALL & ALLIED FAMILIES OF UNDERHILL, P. 117, 118, 111-121 VOL 1 929.273 Sml8u New Engl Hist & Gen Reg Vol XCVll p. 285 974B2ne History of Durham NH. by Stackpole& Thompson Vol 2 According to WFT CD#10 Tree #839, and "family tradition", Edward Small was a son of Sir Walter Raleigh II, but there is no concrete evidence to prove this, based upon research by several recognized genealogists. There is also much speculation that Edward Small was a brother to John Small, who migrated to New England in the early 1600's, but recent DNA testing seems to have ruled this out. Several DNA tests for descendants for both Edward and John Small have not shown common genetic markers.
FROM OUR SMALLEY LINEAGE by Viola Smalley Miller written 1961. Soft cover, over 145 pages, Indexed, from Mrs. Virginia Jensen, 1990 Durham, Palatine, Ill. 60067: The story begins with John Smalley and Edward Smale, immigrants from England to Mass. and Maine. John, a tailor was the first to arrive. He came to Plymouth Colony, Mass. June 5, 1632. He married Ann Walden, Nov. 29, 1638. The family moved to Nausett (Eastham) on Cape Cod and lived there 23 years. The next move was to Saconnet, R.I. and a little later Piscataway, Middlesex County NJ. John died July 30, 1692 and Ann died Jan 29, 1694. They are buried in Piscataway. Edward Smale was born about 1600 [1589 by other sources] and lived in Bideford, Devon, England. He was a clothier, manufacturer, and merchant of woolen goods. He married Eizabeth and was the father of six children. He and Francis the oldest son, sailed for America about 1635. He stopped at Plymouth to see John Smalley and then settled in Maine by 1640. He worked at various occupations in and around Kittery, Maine. He is presumed to have returned to England as his wife and three younger children never came to America. She died in 1665 and is buried in the old church yard in Bideford. Edward was still living. His death date and burial place is not known."
Edward Small, the presumtive father of Francis, came to Maine under the auspices of his kinsman, Sir Ferdinando Gorges, about 1632, or possibly a few years later. He and Champernowne, together with several others, founded Piscataqua, which has since been divided into the towns of Kittery, Eliot, South Berwick and Berwick. He was in Piscataqua in 1640 and seems to have been there some years. He was a magistrate in 1645. He sold a part of his land in 1647 and perhaps went to Dover, New Hampshire; plssibly he went to the Isles of Shoals. All in all it is most probable that he tired of a rough life in the wilderness and returned to England. Tradition says that he and John, the founder of Eastham, were brothers, and many facts strengthen that tradition. The name of this wife, I have not yet learned. In addition to Francis, I am confident that he had an older son, named Edward, who once lived in Dover, New Hampshire. http://members.shaw.ca/kashuba4/family/fam/fam00275.html Ellison / Hagan / Marks/ Smalley/ Watton Family History Centre
