Edward James Robinson was born on 19th December 1852 at North Mundham in Sussex, son of Fanny Robinson, formerly Edwards, and her husband James Robinson, an agricultural labourer. Edward was their eldest child; they had only married fourteen days before his birth. Edward's maternal grandparents were both still alive and living locally, as were his maternal grandmother's parents, his great grandparents, Ann and John Hammond, who died in 1858 and 1860. Edward appears in the 1861 census living with his parents and a brother at Mill in Sidlesham. They are listed under the name Allen which was Edward's father James's stepfather's name, which the family sometimes used.

Edward's parents went on to have six children in total, but the next three after Edward each died young. By the time Edward was ten years old he had had a brother who died at the age of eight months, a sister who died at the age of nine months, and another brother who had died at the age of two years old. Edward's two youngest brothers did survive to adulthood, but the age gap between him and them was considerable; he was seventeen when Henry was born and nineteen when George was born. Edward's grandfather John Edwards died in 1872.

Edward was married on 26th April 1879, aged 26, to Charlotte Brown from Aldingbourne, where she had grown up in the hamlet of Lidsey. They went on to have five children together, although one died young. On census night in 1881 Edward was away from home, lodging at Patching with a couple named William and Ellen Edwards, who may have been distant relatives on his mother's side. Meanwhile, Charlotte and her eldest son were still living at Lidsey with Charlotte's father.

Around the mid 1880s the family moved from Lidsey to the neighbouring hamlet of Shripney, which fell within the parish of South Bersted. They appear there in each census from 1891 to 1911, with Edward working as a labourer. Charlotte's father was still living with them in the 1891 census.

Edward's eldest son married in 1901. Edward's maternal grandmother Sarah Edwards died in 1903, aged 95. She had lived to see Edward's son (her eldest known great grandchild) married. Edward's first known grandchild was born in 1905.

Edward's father James Robinson appears to have died in either 1913 or 1915. Edward did not long outlive his father; he died in 1917, aged 64. He and Charlotte had been married for 38 years. Charlotte survived him by six years, dying in 1923, aged 68. Edward's mother also outlived him.

This baptism has been linked to the Edward James Robinson who married Charlotte Brown on the basis that their marriage certificate gives his father's name as James Robinson, and in the censuses after their marriage Edward claimed to have been born variously in Sidlesham or Mundham around 1852 - and the Edward baptised in 1852 was baptised in North Mundham but spent most of his childhood in Sidlesham.
