Edward Norman was baptised on 24th May 1840 at Husborne Crawley in Bedfordshire, son of a lace maker called Mary Norman, formerly Lewis, and her husband Richard Norman, an agricultural labourer. Edward appears in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses living with his parents in Husborne Crawley. By 1861 he was working as an apprentice carpenter.
Edward was the only one of the family to move more than a few miles from Husborne Crawley. He moved to Lewisham in the south-eastern suburbs of London, where in 1867 he married Mary Mercer, who was originally from Cowbeech in the parish of Hurstmonceux in Sussex.
In 1871 he was a builder and carpenter employing 2 men and 1 boy. The couple were living at 11 Tranquil Vale, in the Blackheath area of Lewisham with their eldest 2 children and 1 apprentice, who was called Henry Mercer and was from Cowbeech, suggesting he was a relative of Mary's.
Two more daughters were born by 1875, and all four children were born in Blackeath:
George 1868-1935
Florence Emma 1869-1900
Marian 1872-1946
Clara Elizabeth 1875-1890
Edward died on 21st January 1875 at Tranquil Vale. Clara was born around the same time - her birth was registered in the first quarter of 1875.
Mary then returned to Sussex. In 1881 she was a confectioner living at 9, Cobden Place, Hailsham with her four children and a lodger, remarrying shortly afterwards to George Walter Thyme. She was at the same address in 1891 with her two surviving daughters who were then respectively an assistant teacher and a dressmaker's assistant.
Marian then married George Godfrey Guy at Hailsham on 3 September 1898. She subsequently died in Hailsham, as did her brother.
By 1901 her mother had moved to 21 Station Road, was still there in 1911 and died in Hailsham in 1926.
George never married and was living at 2 Victoria Road Hailsham when he died on 24 March 1935, leaving £1532 4s 9d.
